Flower of the Month April - Gerbera

Flower of the Month April - Gerbera

In April we mark Easter and the arrival of new life. The perfect setting for a colourful flower. With its cheerful appearance, the gerbera is the ideal candidate for some extra celebrations this month. Consumers can read all about this versatile flower at Funnyhowflowersdothat.co.uk.
Origin of the gerbera
The gerbera is an unscented flower which is part of the Asteraceae family. It originates from South Africa, Asia, South America and Tasmania. Some 900 million gerberas a year are produced in the Netherlands with 600 different varieties of colour, shape and size. She’s one popular lady!

The gerbera’s colours and shapes
When you think of gerberas, you think of colour! The gerbera’s basic colours are white, red, yellow, pink, purple, orange and green. The flower is also available bicoloured, multicoloured and in various shades derived from the basic colours. The flower’s beautiful heart can be black or green. In other words: there’s plenty of choice when it comes to colour. The shape is always cheerful: single and double flowered, pom-pom and spider shapes. Have you noticed that when a child draws a flower, it’s always in the shape of a gerbera?

Caring for the gerbera
  • Trim the stem diagonally with a sharp knife.
  • Use a clean (glass) vase and fill it with approx. 7 cm of tap water at room temperature. Use cut flower food for a mixed bouquet.
  • Ensure the right ambient temperature (max. 20 °C).
  • Do not place gerberas in a draught, in full sun or near central heating.
  • Regularly top the vase up with tap water.
Symbolism of the gerbera
The gerbera is the birth flower. Its presence means: you make everything more beautiful! With its colourful and sunny appearance it makes your home loads more cheerful and welcoming straightaway.
Thanks to Flower Council of Holland for all the above information.
As a wedding florist I create many bouquets and table centrepieces with gerberas. There does seem to be some florists however, that won't use them. Fear not, if you love gerbera, whatever another florist may have said, they do last the day and will create striking displays for your wedding in a wide range of colours.

If you love them as much as I do, please get in touch and we can talk through options and colours to create fabulous displays to WOW your guests.

I have many designs in my portfolio and happy brides to prove they are as versatile as any other beautiful flower.

Will you tickled pink with your reception flower designs? A very popular colour once again and many flowers come in many shades of pink, so always lots of choice, whatever time of year.
Your guest tables can be sweetly simple or more ornate, whatever your choice I am sure we can fulfil your style.

Our beautiful wine glass designs are a great talking point for your guests, roses and gerbera

or lily and roses, the choice is yours.

For long tables there isn't much room so fish bowls with a hydrangea head are just perfect.

We have a range of sizes for fish bowls and the large ones are lovely on round tables,

Jam jars are still popular and these cute ones with candles are full of summer loveliness.

Our large hurricane vases can be filled with any flower but these spring hyacinths will certainly oil the air with their luscious scent.

Low martini vases are a nice change from fish bowls.

Another jam jar setting with larger flower heads of full roses and peonies.

Glass Cubes are a step up from jam jars, here filled with beautiful roses and peony.

Or how about bright pink lily with willow detail for height?

For extra height we have lilies in tall vases, adding colour to a marquee without blowing the budget.

These are slightly fuller for a dramatic styled setting.

Posies are perfect summer flower displays and are excellent to give away as gifts afterwards.
Gerbera, hydrangea, stocks and spray roses

or different varieties of roses with freesia.

Our gorgeous pumpkin vases make cute displays, roses, wax flower, carnations and ferns,

intersperse with jam jars of roses, peonies and sweet peas, to add a touch of glamour.

Simple vases of flowers are often overlooked. Spring tulips with fern for a seasonal style setting.

Mix up jam jars for your top table, make your flowers go further with candles too.

May be you are having a sweetheart top table? Go for a small long and low to compliment the bridal bouquet.
Roses, astrantia, eustoma, and spray roses.

Having a formal top table? Our beautiful long and lows can be styled to suit your setting.

Roses, lilies and eustoma.

Roses, eustoma, freesia, and mixed foliage.

Having to have an L shape top table? We can create different designs to suit.

Looking for a design with more height for your guest tables? Our stunning candelabras will do just that. Standing at 100cm tall plus candle these are show stoppers.

White gerbera wedding

A lovely gerbera wedding I was thrilled to be asked to provide flowers for from the weekend.
Julie knew what she wanted when she first met me at a wedding fair and fortunately I had a very similar bouquet on my stand.
The bride's bouquet was gorgeous black centred gerberas with lilac roses, gyp, cuscus foliage and bear grass loops.

We added some sparkle with diamante pins in the roses

Julie had 5 bridesmaids in total, all different ages, so we went all gerberas for the older ladies, mimicking the bride with cuscus foliage and bear grass loops.

The younger maids had a smaller bouquet in the same style

and lastly the flower girl carried a single gerbera with bear grass loops and ribbon trails.

We also provided 6 groomsmen buttonholes, similar in style to this one (I forgot to take photos)

and also ladies buttonholes.

If you love gerberas and would like to include them in your wedding flowers, either as one of many blooms or on their own, please get in touch to discuss your options. We love gerberas here at The Studio and are always happy to provide them for your bouquets (unlike many florists!) and buttonholes. Many will tell you they won't withstand the day, but we have done many gerbera weddings over the years without problem.
For more of our designs go to 'labels' on the right and scroll to 'gerbera'.

We look forward to hearing from you soon
